Redmi note 5 pro : Owner Review

by Vishnu Sharma

I am Vishnu Sharma a college student and for me, the smartphone is a very a handful device to get my work done on the go. I used to have Lenovo vibe K5 note but due to heating and charging issues I had to change my phone so I bought Redmi note 5 pro last year in October. I have used this ph0ne for over 9 months and is now consider myself capable of giving some honest review and specifications about this smartphone. One thing I can say about this phone is that it barely misses any feature that I needed in my work. It has a lot of variants and I bought the 6gb/64gb variant at price Rs16,000. So now let’s see some specifications and my overall experience of this smartphone.

Top features:

  • Great camera
  • Impressive large display
  • Powerful Processor (I know because I play a lot of games and college work especially 48 chrome tabs at a single time )

Design and Display

The front design which is as usual dominated by the display and the selfie camera, earpiece and other sensors on the top edge and due to the er screen size the capacitive keys are now on-screen keys. I have not used any tempered glass yet for the screen yet still there is not even a single scratch on my display which thanks to the layer of Gorilla glass which I must say gives a scratch resistant surface and saved my tempered glass cost. The curves around the phone allow me to hold and operate the phone easily. Now moving to the backside of the phone I must say its fingerprint sensor is just working fine not super fast but as compared to my previous phone the recognition time is a little better. The speaker is at the bottom of the phone which is quite a strange design for me because my previous phones have it on the back side and with the speaker, it has audio jack and USB charging port aligned all at the bottom of the phone. The left side contains the sim tray where are my sims are inserted and on the right side are the power and the volume buttons. The best part which I just loved it is the IR sensor on top of the phone which makes it possible to use the functionality of MI remote which I use a lot for TV at home, projector in college and the setup box at home as so an all in one remote for me. The display feature used by me a lot is the reading mode because I have to work with a lot of pdf and also the Kindle app so the reading mode does the good for my eyes by giving an efficient reduction in blue light emissions. Overall I can say that I have no complaints about the phone’s slim design and it’s working as a perfect phone for me.

Now coming to the performance this phone is indeed a beast with 6gb ram and Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor which makes Redmi note 5 pro the world’s first smartphone to be powered by it. It came with MIUI 9 and Android Oreo version but now have been updated to MIUI 10. It got the Android PIE update this week and it is working just fine for me as I updated it this week. As with the previous MI phones, this also has the dual app space which I personally don’t use and the app lock feature which I use a lot to have little privacy (it’s necessary). All the apps are distributed in multiple screens and there is a leftmost screen which contains some cards having frequently used features, ads some app screens and can be customized as you want though I have not used it even a single time yet. It is backed by the 4000 mAh battery which has the best performance for me and works for one day easily with all my heavy work done easily.

Let’s check out the camera now as for the rear camera it comes with a configuration of dual camera setup of 12mp + 5mp RGB sensors. The secondary camera’s purpose is for the depth sensing in the portrait mode and stands up to the expectation. Now the special part the front camera which is of 20mp equipped with beautifying AI algorithm according to Xiomi. Unlock your phone at a glance with Face Unlock. Turn on the screen and Redmi note 5 pro will automatically recognize the face and unlock the phone I don’t know the exact timing but it does unlock very fast in very very less than 1 second I say. The camera app is very simple to use contain a lot of awesome options and filters for clicking photographs especially the panorama is very responsive fast and making videos like short video, time-lapse and slow motion. Here are some clicks took by me with Redmi note 5 pro dual camera as you can see with the watermark appearing in the photograph which can be removed actually by going in the settings of the camera. Beautiful low light image produced by redmi note 5 pro             Close angle shot taken with redmi note 5 pro dual camera

There are no such cons that I observed yet but there are some features which I feel missing in this phone like there was no fast charger offered with the phone and the normal charger take around 2 hrs to charge the phone to 80 percent now which is actually a little bad for me but yes when I bought the phone is used to charge up to 90 percent so the charging time has increased a bit. There Is also one more problem which is about system update because sometimes when I update my phone with mobile data it then it downloads up to 99 percent and starts again downloading the whole file due to some kind of error so there is a wastage of data for me in this case. These are just some cons that find in this phone otherwise working overall fine for me.

Highlights and My Overall Expression

The phone has 6gb RAM which is just great for multitasking and the best part I am able to play Pubg without any lag so the gaming performance is just awesome for me. Another game that I play is Asphalt 9 and that too runs effortlessly on my phone without any heating issues till now. The camera just made me proud a little popular I can say because recently me and my friends went on a Jaipur trip and around 500 photographs are clicked in just 2 days and the best part 400 were clicked by mine phone so that made a little important or you can say my camera was a little popular. The developer options which are the part of my work life for testing my android apps or flutter apps so I use this phone instead of an emulator and so I am able to see how my app will work on android pie and this much large screen and it also allows others to interact with my app and give some reviews on it. So for me, I have no complaints about this phone and it is indeed worth for money.
